Three Australian Landscapes
23 January, 2009 -
18 February, 2009
Ray Hughes Gallery opens the year with Three Australian Landscapes, an exhibition displaying the varied visions of gallery artists Lucy Culliton, Jun Chen and Joe Furlonger. These three artists have an enduring connection with the Australian landscape each describing what they see with a unique mark.
Lucy Culliton’s paintings of the Flinders Ranges capture the same pink mountains, blazing skies and deep shadows that enchanted Hans Heysen at the turn of the century.
Jun Chen portrays spring in Brisbane with his paintings of vibrant magnolia blossoms, their freshness and life belied by the thick oil paint Jun has deftly sculpted to the canvas.
Joe Furlonger’s landscapes come from a 2003 series of Arcadia Valley in central Queensland. The paintings achieve form via surface and flatness, each hand-mixed colour applied quickly in thin washes.
The exhibition is accompanied by a preview of ceramics completed by Jun and Joe in an artist’s residence at Chinese ceramic capital Jingdezhen.
